Analysis of industrial carbon black samples

Carbon Black is a material used as an abrasion resistant filler in industrial applications including automotive tyres, coatings, lacquers, plastics and printing inks. The typical size range for non-agglomerated carbon black is from 10 nm to 500 nm. Given the small sizes involved and the breadth of a typical distribution, particle size distribution measurement using a Disc Centrifuge Photosedimentometer (DCP) is the method of choice delivering accurate, high-resolution results.

Brandenburg Innovation Prize 2021 - Testa Analytical

Determining best ceramics for medical implants.

Researchers from Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary have used a BI-200SM #researchgoniometer system, in #dynamiclightscattering mode, to determine the aggregate size of powders used in producing sintered bulk calcium silicate ceramics. Using light scattering data obtained using the BI-200SM the researchers were able to identify the best bulk ceramics with good mechanical strength, low solubility and similar porosity to bone, allowing them to be used as long-term implants.

Why is flow rate important in GPC/SEC?

To obtain reliable data from your GPC/SEC instrument - each run should be related to a calibration curve obtained by measuring appropriate chromatographic standards. Calculations from GPC/SEC experiments are based on elution volume, which is a product of time and flow rate. As such, knowledge of GPC/SEC flow rate is of paramount importance as it is required to be constant over much longer periods of time than with HPLC separations.

CO-OPERATIVE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

TESTA Analytical and the Technical University of Lodz, Institute of Applied Radiation Chemistry (www.mitr.p.lodz.pl/biomat/), are cooperating on a new project to investigate radiation induced chemical reactions such as polymerization, degradation and cross-linking. This pioneering work aims to characterize intra- and intermolecular reactions under the influence of a strong electron beam. Analytics will be performed with a static light scattering instrument specifically designed for this task and attached to the accelerator head, as well as with batch mode SLS, DLS and GPC-MALS-Viscometry.

HOW IMPORTANT IS ACCURATE PROTEIN MEASUREMENT TO YOU?

Quantifying the amount of protein is highly desirable before isolating, separating and analysing samples using chromatographic techniques. Refractive index (RI) is one of the most commonly used detectors in GPC/SEC and HPLC systems. A key parameter for translating RI detector output to exact sample concentration is the dn/dc value, or specific refractive index increment. STATIC LIGHT SCATTERING OF BIOMACROMOLECULES

A new application note demonstrates how Static Light Scattering (SLS) is capable of measuring the average molecular weight of polydisperse materials, as well as of samples with discrete aggregation numbers, such as proteins. When studying Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA), a protein known to exhibit three isoforms (Mw = 66.5 kDa, 133 kDa, and 200 kDa), the meaning of average molecular weight can be less obvious. The nature of this relationship is demonstrated by comparing the molecular weight measured on our BI-200SM goniometer using traditional static light scattering to the relative abundances from a size exclusion chromatography (SEC) experiment.

ACCELERATE YOUR HPLC PUMP CALIBRATION

HPLC Pumps are commonly calibrated with a gravimetric method by weighing the amount of solvent delivered within a given time and then, using density as parameter, calculating the real flow rate. While this method can be extremely accurate, it is also relatively time consuming, often taking in excess of 30 minutes. The TESTA Liquid Chromatography Flowmeter can measure HPLC flow rate in real time and it also tracks each measurement automatically with microsecond resolution, thus allowing fast and reliable collection of flow rate data. NOT ALL REFRACTIVE INDEX DETECTORS ARE EQUAL

Determination of concentration of samples which do not show absorption in the UV Range can be accomplished by using a differential refractive index detector (DRI). For some process applications however, standard DRI's lack the dynamic range required to measure sample concentrations that are typically higher than in common analytical tasks.
